The NichtraucherHelden app treats and alleviates diagnosed tobacco dependence through cognitive behavioural smoking cessation coaching.
The NichtraucherHelden app is used to monitor, treat and alleviate diagnosed tobacco dependence. Individually tailored cognitive behavioural smoking cessation coaching is designed to help patients overcome nicotine dependence. In July 2021, the BfArM provisionally included the medical programme in the DiGA directory as a digital health application. As part of the daily programme **Dein Tag** (Your Day), participants' motivation to quit is strengthened, the pros and cons of smoking and of quitting are discussed, the health effects of quitting are highlighted, the links between psychological and physiological dependence are explained, typical personal smoking rituals are identified and suitable strategies for dealing with cravings are developed. Patients can shape the course of therapy through their individual data on smoking behaviour as well as information on their confidence of success, wellbeing and current problems. The app's algorithm evaluates these inputs and gives suitable recommendations to positively influence the further course of therapy, for example to relieve withdrawal symptoms and improve wellbeing. The app offers various functions that support motivation, relapse prevention and thus the stabilisation of abstinence. In the **Status section**, patients can set their quit day and view their personal statistics on cigarettes not smoked, money saved and more. This section also contains further motivational elements (e.g. a wish list function, display of health improvements, awards for achievements). To prevent relapses, the **Help section** offers patients various forms of support for acute cravings (reasons to quit, videos, audio files with breathing and relaxation exercises, emergency contacts and games). Patients can also exchange experiences with other app users in a moderated community. The **Stay on track section** is unlocked from the quit day and serves to further stabilise abstinence and prevent weight gain. It contains various fitness videos, healthy recipes and recipe videos. The medical programme was developed in collaboration with a scientific advisory board, pulmonologists and addiction specialists.
The NichtraucherHelden team has been working on digital smoking cessation since 2016. The first NichtraucherHelden course went online in December 2016. In the field of prevention, NichtraucherHelden GmbH offers two §20-certified health courses. In addition, a medical module was developed for approval as a prescription app, which the BfArM provisionally included in the DiGA directory in July 2021. The NichtraucherHelden team is supported by a scientific advisory board of experienced pulmonologists and addiction specialists.
